Spend a Saturday morning with artist Carla Markwart as she talks about the life and works of her parents, Cora and Gordon Markwart. Coffee and breakfast bites provided. This event is free and everyone is welcome to attend. Please register, so that we know how many to plan for.
Cora & Gordon:
Cora Soissa Markwart was born in Concepcion, Chile in 1923 and came to the US as a child with her family. She started art school in Philadelphia, then when the family moved to Chicago for her father’s engineering work, she continued her education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Gordon Markwart was born in Chicago and was attending the Art Institute graduate program when he and Cora met in the early 1940s.
They married in 1947 and lived in Chicago and Oak Park. Gordon taught art in high school and college. Together they also made enamel and silver jewelry. Gordon passed away in 1970 and Cora celebrated 100 in January.
During the 40s and 50s, abstraction was becoming the dominant direction of art. Many artists, like Cora and Gordon, were convinced that representational art had more to offer the viewer and that is the path they chose. Viewers of the exhibit will see influences of Soutine, Kokoschka, Bonnard, and many other 20th century painters.
This show was organized by the artists’ daughter Carla, who despite her mom’s logical advice, became an artist herself.
